Parks & Rec thinking pickleball or volleyball in place of two tennis courts
Posted on Monday October 15, 2018

Two of the Mead Park Tennis Courts getting early morning use by a men’s group in July. — Greg Reilly photo With the sale of Mead Park Tennis permits declining from 400 to 150 over the past decade, the Parks & Recreation Commission is considering the idea of converting perhaps two of Mead’s nine tennis courts for other uses. The topic first came up at the Parks & Rec meeting in September, and it rose again at the group’s Oct. 10 meeting. One of the reasons for the discussion now is that there is money in the Park’s budget to renovate the eight tennis courts that are a “Har-Tru” surface. Commission Chairman Sally Campbell said they ought to look at possible new uses for a couple of the courts before moving forward to spend the money on court renovation. Some ideas raised at the Commission meeting are to convert two of the Har-Tru courts into year-round hardcourts, which could be used also for pickleball, a relatively new activity. Or, Campbell believes that converting the space of two courts into beach volleyball courts would result in a lot of play. Har-Tru is a popular brand of clay tennis court found at most country, field and tennis clubs in this area. The clay courts are softer than the hard courts that the high school has, and on top of the clay is a light, sandy material, which allows the players’ feet to slide slightly, making less strain on the legs. While preferred by many players, Har-Tru courts are limited to seasonal use, and they are more expensive to maintain. The Parks & Recreation members are actively seeking input from the community on how to use the tennis court space.
